Overwhelmingly, women fall into the role of caregiver for their loved ones. While you may try to balance it all on your own, everyone can use a little help.

An antioxidant supplement helps in the maintenance of good health, while a probiotic can help support favourable gut and vaginal flora. That’s right—probiotics support more than just gut health. Just as the flora in your gut can become unbalanced, so too can vaginal flora. If the “bad” bacteria begin to overtake the “good” bacteria, this overgrowth can lead to an infection called bacterial vaginosis.

There are a number of factors that can upset the healthy balance of gut and vaginal flora. One of the most common is antibiotic use, but oral and topical contraceptives, as well as feminine hygiene products may also disrupt and reduce the population of “good” bacteria.

A healthy, balanced vaginal microbiota is also an acidic environment, which inhibits the growth of yeast and infection. This is important for the prevention of yeast infections, which are different from bacterial vaginosis. A yeast infection is caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans. Normally, a balanced vaginal microbiota would keep organisms like this yeast under control. If the yeast grows too much causing a yeast infection, it can be treated with an antifungal cream or suppository to restore healthy vaginal flora and bring back that balance.
